Dave Peel: Kenfig Dunes is "one of the most complex areas I have mapped"

Dave Peel recently finished his survey and posted the following on his Facebook page:

"New Year has been busy on one main project which I've just completed: Kenfig Dunes, which will be used for two days of Croeso 2016. I thoroughly recommend you take the chance to run on this remarkable area (you'll have two stabs at mastering it as its being used for days 1&2).

It was one of the most complex areas I have mapped and a rewarding challenge. What stands it out from the other dune areas I've been on is the water and vegetation detail. There's a complex pattern... of ponds and marshes lying between the dune ranges, which at times created a puzzle for me to work out how to get from one 'island' of terrain to the other.

Add to this the patchwork of scrub and woodland and you get a unique orienteering experience. It’s grazed by cattle and sheep so parts are like a bowling green.

From the mapping perspective, the challenge was generalising the mass of detail to create a clear picture of the terrain. I was blessed with LiDAR and complemented this with detail from good quality aerial imagery."
