Car parking problems force change of area
The Croeso organisers had to make a difficult decision recently to abandon the Day 1 venue of Carn Owen and return to an "old favourite", Gwanas, instead. Carn Owen was a brand new area and had been mapped from scratch by Malcolm Campbell. Draft courses had been planned and one of them had even been test run in early December.
But, as Croeso coordinator Dave Brodie said in mid December:
"After very careful site inspections in view of concerns about Carn Owen - particularly about the need for elaborate wet weather car parking contingency - yesterday's meeting took the difficult decision of moving Day 1 from Carn Owen to Gwanas."
Gwanas is also an open area, with good contour detail, and was used for the Croeso weeks in both 1996 and 2000, gaining good reports from competitors at the time. It has ample parking and should prove to be an excellent replacement for Carn Owen. Gwanas will be the furthest terrain from the Event Centre at a distance of 30 miles, but still takes under 40 minutes by car (according to Google Maps).
The change has had some knock-on effects with regard to the day officials, with a new planner and organiser now on board. The original controller is still "on the job" and will provide welcome continuity during the change.
