Day 1 - Gwanas on Sunday 22nd July

Travel and Parking: From Event Centre turn right onto A487 and travel to Machynlleth where you need to turn right (by the clock tower) onto A489. Follow this road for 10km until reaching a roundabout at Glantwymyn. Turn left onto A470 signposted for Dolgellau & Welshpool.

At next roundabout in Mallwyd continue on A470 for approximately 12km. As you descend the Bwlch Yr Oerddrws (cold door pass) you will see Croeso signposts to turn off A470 onto a farm track to car park. Approach this turning with great care; queues should be expected. The track is rough in places and shared with pedestrians - please take care.

No entry after 12.00. No exit before 12.30.

Note: There are major road works on the A487 at Glandyfi, between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth. You should allow 30 MINUTES extra for your journey.

Bus Drop Off: Allow 20 minutes to walk to Assembly. Part of the walk is along the track used by cars. Take care.

Assembly: Assembly is on an exposed field with space for club tents, and suitable for good push-chairs.

Grid Reference: SH771166 (Streetmap); Google Maps

Start: One start for all courses. Allow 30 minutes uphill to walk from Assembly, along a track and then forest ride (not suitable for push-chairs). Land alongside the route is out of bounds.

Map: Resurveyed & cartography April 2012 by OmapZ, based on original 1996 map by Peter Seward. Scale 1:10,000. Contour interval 5m. Magnetic North 2012.

Terrain: Rough open grass slopes with many rock features, some streams. The area slopes steeply, up to 660m to the east. All courses will visit pasture fields, which are steep and rough in places, with crags.

Safety Information: Safety bearing is West to the main road. To report an incident East or North of the start, return to the start.

There is one knee-high stone wall for most courses, which may be crossed anywhere with care. Other walls or fences may only be crossed at the mandatory crossing points or through gates. Field gates will be open.Three mandatory crossings are shown on the map. Two are stiles over fences on top of stone walls and many courses will use these. The third  crossing is over a marked, low wire fence and all courses (except course 24) will use this. Care should be taken.  Do not climb barbed wire fences.

Do not attempt to climb down or up any crags.

There will be cows, sheep and horses on the competition area, for all except course 24. They are best ignored. Do not get between cows and young.

Do not drink water from the streams.

The area is exposed to winds. You should be prepared for severe weather including poor visibility. Carrying weather-proof clothing may be compulsory and notices will be posted on the way to the Start.

Special information:

Report any damage to walls.

Leaving the area: When leaving the area turn left onto A470 and if  returning to Aberystwyth turn left onto A487 after 250 metres, towards Machynlleth. Do not turn right onto the A470 due to the high speed of vehicles approaching and the limited visibility.
