Day four - 7 August 2008
Wentwood West

On this page you will find details of the terrain, a map extract, a few ideas of things to do after you have run, and a few photos of the area.

The terrain

Wentwood is an area of old planted woodland overlooking the Severn Esturary. After three days of open moorland Wentwood will provide new and different challenges. The wood is managed partly by the woodland trust and partly by the Forestry Commission

A few ancient trees, such as this old oak remain in the forest.

The views over the Severn Estuary can be stunning.

The map

This is an extract from an old SWOC map. The area has matured since it was last used for a major event.

A bit about the area around Wentwood and some things to do

Wentwood is the furthest east of any of the event days. It is located close to Chepstow and Caldicot.

A few things to do around Caldicot can be found here. If you want a bit more orienteering Caldicot Castle has a small permanent course. Detals can befound on the South Wales Orienteering Club site. The castle traces its history back to norman times.

Chepstow also has a very impressive castle dating back nearly a thousand years. There are some nice photos on this site.

A few other things to do after you have run can be found here

If you want to travel a few more miles, a few miles beyond one of the bridges over the severn is Bristol, with an array of visitor atractions and good restaurants.

A few miles to the west is Newport with its rich industrial heritage. My favourite is the famous 100 year old transporter bridge.

An old roman fort can be found at Caerleon
