Day two 4 August 2008
The Blorenge

On this page you will find details of the terrain, a map extract, a few ideas of things to do after you have run, and a few photos of the area.

The Blorenge is located adjacent to the day 3 area and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site at Blaenavon.

The terrain

The Blorenge consists of open moorland with many complex areas of former small scale industrial extraction. The area was used on the longer courses at the 2007 British Orienteering Championship.

The views can be stunning. This picture shows a typical area on the Blorange with great views towards Abergevenny in the background.

The map

The map area was extended in 2007 for the Bristish Orienteering Championship.

A bit about Blaenavon and some things to do

The World Heritage Site Website states

"The area around Blaenavon bears eloquent and exceptional testimony to the pre-eminence of South Wales as the world's major producer of iron and coal in the 19th century. All the necessary elements can be seen, including coal and ore mines, quarries, a primitive railway system, furnaces, the homes of workers, and the social infrastructure of their community."

Today Blaenavon proudly tells the story of her past in a variety of ways. Come and explore. A truely warm welcome awaits." The site is well worth a read.

There is plenty to do in the area around the Blorenge and Blaenavon. Top of the list if you are atracted by the industrial heritage are probably Big Pit, the ancient Iron Works and the steam railway.

If you want something a bit more relaxing why not visit Abergavenny, well known for a number of top class restaurants.

If you fancy a walk after you have run, you can find a few ideas on this site.

This is a great site if you want to find out about the industrial heritage of the area.
